Chapter Twenty Seven

One week in the mines was boring. Two made me want to scratch my eyes out. Three was nearly enough to make me spend my days screaming. After a month I needed to move.

At some point along the way I'd forgotten how to sit still.

I lay in our little hut with my legs up against the metal wall. The double mattress had made the place seem luxurious when Coal had managed to trade for it but I felt like it took up too much space now. Or more like there wasn't enough space.

I sighed and pushed my hair out behind me in a fan. It trailed off the edge of the bed and onto the floor. I clicked my tongue as I tapped my feet up and down repeatedly. I closed my eyes, though I wasn't tired. I sighed again.

"What are you up to?" Coal asked as he ducked his head through the curtain. I looked at him upside down and smiled. At least I could look at Coal as much as I liked. And it wasn't getting boring either.

"I'll give you three guesses," I said sarcastically.

"I've been thinking that we need to get out of here for a bit."

"I don't wanna explore this place anymore. It's not as interesting as it seemed at first." We had spent the first week exploring every nook and cranny of the warehouses and the quarry and even the parts of the mine that were still safe to wander. It had been fun at first. But now I knew it like the back of my hand and it made me feel trapped.

"When I say get out of here, I mean out of the mines altogether."

"What?" I twisted around and sat up.

"Do you trust me?" Coal held his hand out to me and I hesitated.

"If you're winding me up I'm gunna be so annoyed." I took his hand and let him pull me to my feet.

"Get your coat." He released me and ducked back outside.

I pulled my boots on and stuffed my arms into my coat. I pushed my way through the curtain but Coal wasn't there. I popped my head into Alicia and Crystal's hut then Taylor and Garrett's but no one was there. I could hear Luca reading to Blane and I smiled but I didn't interrupt them. He was coming back to us bit by bit as the pain receded further within him.

Finally, I paused outside Laurie and Hunter's hut. On the one hand, Laurie would be upset if I didn't tell her I was going. But on the other, Hunter might not allow it. We hadn't actually discussed the details of how far we were supposed to wander without asking him.

I took a deep breath and turned away. The stairs clanged metallically under my boots as I flew down them. I took the quickest route through the maze of ramshackle buildings and jogged through the connecting tunnel into the stable warehouse.

I still couldn't see Coal anywhere.

"He's outside sweetheart," Lee called from across the room.
